How does a Heat Pump Work

HPWHs use electricity to move heat from one place to another instead of generating heat directly. Heat pumps works in reverse of a refrigerator. A refrigerator removes heat from an enclosed box and expels that heat to the surrounding air, a HPWH takes the heat from surrounding air and transfers it to water in an enclosed tank. Let discuss in detail:

Heat pump water heater contains components:

A compressor

A refrigerant

Two heat exchangers (a condenser and an evaporator)

An expansion valve

Firstly renewable energy from surrounding air is passed through an evaporator with the help of a fan.This evaporator contains a liquid refrigerant.

This refrigerant evaporates to a gas and extracts heat from the ambient air.

The compressor increases the pressure of warm gas of the refrigerant and becomes a hot gas.

This hot gas enters in to the condenser and transfers heat to the water flowing from a storage tank.

The refrigerant becomes a warm liquid.

It then passes through the expansion valve and becomes a cool liquid and enters back to the evaporator .

The whole process is repeated.

Thus the heat absorbed from the air is given to the water and the warming continues till the desired temperature is reached.

HPWHs automatically switch to standard electric resistance heat during the periods of  high demand for hot water.So they are known as hybrid hot water heaters.There are  different modes for HPWHs which include:

Efficiency/Economy – Maximizes energy efficiency and savings by only using the heat pump to heat water.

Auto/Hybrid – The setting is good for daily use, gives energy-efficient water heating with sustained heat.

Electric/Heater – This high-demand setting is the least energy-efficient, using only the electric element to heat water.

Vacation & Timer–This is not available for all models.  Save energy by placing the unit in sleep mode when away from home until you return.
